During the heat of summer, it takes some extra effort to keep your lawn healthy. If there is excess water on the lawn, your grass may turn yellow, and if you mow your lawn too low, your grass may turn brown. Below are five tips to help you keep your lawn green this summer.

1. Mow High to Keep Your Lawn Green

The first tip that will help you keep your lawn green this summer is to maintain taller grass in your lawn. Although many people prefer a length of between 1-2 inches, you should consider letting your lawn grow 3-4 inches high so it retains more water and your grass grows deeper roots to absorb moisture. The healthiest summer lawns have taller grass that shades and protects the soil in dry, hot weather.

2. Avoid watering your lawn to the extent of runoff.

When watering your lawn, use a sprinkler that evenly distributes water over your yard. Take a break for 15-20 minutes when sprinkling your lawn so that the water can soak in before sprinkling again. This also helps your grass develop longer roots to absorb water during summer. Grass does not need as much water as you might think. Watering for an hour twice a week is enough. Lawns need one inch of water per week, and early morning is the best time to water your lawn.

3. Watch the Weather

Some of the tips to help you keep your lawn green this summer is adjusting your lawn watering around the weather. On rainy days, there’s no need to water the lawn since the weather is doing it for you. Consider investing in a smart sprinkler that can detect the lawn humidity and only waters your lawn when appropriate. Remember that grass only needs 1 inch of water per week, so if your lawn got enough water through rainfall, save your next watering until the following week.

4. Use Cool Water

Make sure you only use cool water on your lawn. If your hose has been out in direct sunlight, let the water run for a bit first until it cools off to avoid any damage or stress to your grass.

5. Control Weeds.

Weeds can be a nuisance in your lawn and damage the health of your grass. Always put into place an early weed prevention method once you detect them in your lawn to keep the weeds from spreading.
